Diaphragm pumps are a go-to sprayer pump for turf and tree care professionals. There are so many options out there, and comparing the specs of each one can be time-consuming. I have worked to compile the important specs of dozens of different diaphragm pump models from several different manufacturers to help you compare the difference between them.
Important Diaphragm Pump Specs
When selecting a pump for turf care or tree care, the important specifications to compare are flow rate, PSI, and the horsepower required to drive it. This chart displays the important specifications of several different diaphragm pumps.
Model numbers shown in the charts below may not be complete. These are the base models, there are various shaft types, materials of construction, and other accessories but the repair kits and specs are the same.

Max GPM
In the chart below, the column that displays GPM is referring to the maximum gallons per minute the pump will move. This assumes the pump is operating at its max rpm and it’s driven by adequate horsepower.
Max PSI
The maximum pressure that each diaphragm pump can achieve is listed in the max psi column. Again this is the psi that can be achieved at the pump’s maximum rpm.
Pressure combined with flow is how you get the long-distance spray out of your spray gun that you need to reach trees or spray areas remotely.
*RPM
The maximum RPM of each model is listed in the chart. This is typically very similar for most diaphragm pumps, about 550 RPM. It is important to note that when driven by a gas engine a gear reduction is required. Most gas engines run about 3500 max rpm. So if you were to directly drive a diaphragm pump with one it would be way too fast.
All the diaphragm pump manufacturers offer their pumps in a standard version and a version with a gearbox on it. This gearbox is intended to bolt directly onto a gas engine and provide the necessary reduction in RPM for the pump to operate safely. This is usually a 6 to 1 gear reduction. Reducing 3500 RPM down to about 550.
These pump models usually have a GR in the model number. It is important to know how much Horsepower is needed and what the shaft size/type is on your specific engine so you can find a pump that will mate up directly.
If you were using a hydraulic motor or some other drive for your pump then you will need to know what rpm that drive operates at compared to the pump to get the proper gear ratio.
Required HP
In addition to the correct RPM and shaft size, you need an engine that can produce enough horsepower for your diaphragm pump to perform as expected. Delivering high flow rates at medium and high pressures requires a relatively large amount of horsepower compared to other types of pumps that deliver high volumes at low-pressure.
This chart shows the horsepower required in order for the pumps to perform at their peak. Often a gas engine you’ll choose an engine that is slightly larger than what is required by the pump.
Diaphragm Pump Repair Kits
Diaphragm pumps are known for their versatility but they do require routine maintenance and periodic replacement of the diaphragms to continue to perform. Most manufacturers will recommend replacing the diaphragms about every 500 working hours or at least once each spraying season.
Most of the diaphragm kits listed in this chart contain diaphragms made of materials that are generally compatible with a wide variety of agrochemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. Always confirm compatibility with the chemical you will be spraying.
The other main repair items are valves and O-rings. You can find the part numbers for the valve kit, O-ring kit, and diaphragm kit for each of these diaphragm pumps in the charts below.

Hypro 9910 Series
Hypro discontinued their very popular 9910 series of diaphragm pumps. This means that the Hypro 9910-D30 is now discontinued. Hypro now offers the 9915 series which is similar to the 9910 series, but not an exact replacement.
Parts for the 9910 series are still available for the time being. The good news is that in general AR diaphragm pumps are nearly identical to the 9910 series. So an AR30 would be the same as a Hypro 9910-D30. You can even use the AR repair kits in the Hypro equivalent pump.
This chart shows the repair kits for the different diaphragm pumps. In the case of the Hypro 9910 series, it shows the Hypro number as well as the AR equivalent.

Control Units
Diaphragm pumps require pressure-regulating valves to operate safely and effectively. Typically the pump manufacturers provide models that come complete with a regulating valve pressure gauge and spray controls. These controls allow the operator to adjust the pressure of the sprayer, provided safety relief, and allow them to change from their spray gun to agitation or other accessories.
Pump Oil
Diaphragm sprayer pumps require oil to lubricate the crankcase. Monitoring the oil level is crucial to ensure your pump operates correctly and to extend the life of the pump. You can find a chart showing the oil type in the oil capacity for all of these different diaphragm pumps in this article on diaphragm pump oil.
